Harvest is your secret weapon to prep for next season

Harvest is a great time to evaluate the past season and plan for the next. The view from a picker or stripper gives important perspective to help you make decisions for future seasons.

Want to get an edge for next season? Don’t miss out on opportunities to learn from harvest.

Harvest provides one of the best chances to assess your crop from a bird’s eye view. Sitting in a cotton picker or stripper gives you a vantage point – and time - to evaluate your fields and consider how you can improve for next season. Time in the cab is time well spent.

As you make your way across fields, ask yourself: How did my weed control system work this season? Harvest is a great time to evaluate weed control for two reasons. First, escapes and problem spots will be obvious from the elevated view. And weed escapes will stand out against defoliated cotton. Second, hours in the cab will give you time to consider your alternatives.

If you aren’t getting the control you expect from dicamba or glyphosate, consider the increased options with PhytoGen® W3FE varieties and the Enlist® weed control system. Jonathan Siebert, Ph.D., Corteva Agronomy Lead – South Delta and Southwest, said growers across the Cotton Belt have moved to PhytoGen® brand varieties because of consistent yield potential and more flexible weed control options.

“Over the last few years, we’ve seen a big shift toward PhytoGen varieties for several reasons. First, we’ve seen the proven consistent yields backed by multiple years of third-party data, such as university official variety trials and on-farm trials,” Siebert said. “Second, growers are using the Enlist weed control system to get more options and flexibility without the restrictions and uncertainty of a dicamba-based system.”

The Enlist system allows growers to make over-the-top applications of Enlist® herbicides, as well glufosinate and glyphosate. Enlist One® herbicide provides maximum tank-mix flexibility, allowing growers to tank mix it with Liberty® herbicide for better control of noxious weeds such as Palmer amaranth.

Enlist herbicides also have a wider application window without calendar cut-off dates, again providing growers with more flexibility for later season applications. If you notice more weeds than you’d like to see at harvest, the Enlist weed control system provides an opportunity to improve control.

Producers who’ve made the switch to PhytoGen brand varieties have noticed better weed control on their farms. Louisiana producer Nathan Lee has planted PhytoGen W3FE varieties for years while successfully using the Enlist weed control system to keep fields clean. Compared to his previous herbicide regimen, the Enlist system is an easy choice when it comes to controlling stubborn weeds.

“Enlist One controls pigweeds better than dicamba. When I put the sprayer in the field, I know I’m about to wipe out some weeds,” Lee said.

For applications of Enlist One® herbicide, Lee follows the label and has found that keeping applications on target is possible with Enlist® herbicides.

“If I follow application guidelines, I can spray Enlist One row to row with another crop,” Lee said.

Alabama producer Jeremy Wilson tells a similar story from his experience in the Southeast. He began planting PhytoGen W3FE varieties for the option to use Enlist® One herbicide and bring a new mode of action to his farm.

“I really like Enlist One — I think it’s a superior product. I get really good weed control, especially on my morning glories and pigweed,” Wilson said. “I saw early on that it is a good product — it does a better job than other options.”

Don’t miss an opportunity to get the most out of this season’s harvest. Use the time in the cab to evaluate your current system and ask yourself: Am I willing to make a change to ultimately improve my operation?
